ADAAJUNE1207CRCforLowCarbonLivingOnthe22November2011theGovernmentannouncedfundingof28millionfortheCRCforLowCarbonLiving.ObjectivesfortheCRCLCLaretobringtogetherleadingresearchersandkeyend-userstodevelopnewtoolstoreducecarbonemissionsandtransformthebuiltenvironmenttoalowcarbonfuture.TheAshDevelopmentAssociationofAustraliabeingafoundationalsupporteroftheCRCbidhascommittedtothesevenyearprogram.TheaimoftheCRCistoprovidetheGovernmentandindustrywithsocialtechnologicalandpolicytoolstoovercomeidentiedmarketbarrierspreventingadoptionofcosteffectivelowcarbonproductsandserviceswhilemaintainingindustrycompetitivenessandimprovingqualityoflife.TheCRCincludesthreeprogramsofresearchconsistentwithmajorindustryrecommendations1.IntegratedBuildingSystemsThisprogramwilldevelopilow-carbon-lifecyclebuildingconstructioncomponentsmaterialsandiibuilding-integratedmultipurposesolarproducts.Theseoutputstargetnextgenerationconstructionpracticewherestep-changeemissionscutsarerequired.NewdesigntoolsratingframeworksandAustralianStandardswillunderpinandstimulatethemarketforlowcarbonproductsandservices.DesigntoolsandasolarproductwillbecommercialisedinpartnershipwithSMEs.2.LowCarbonPrecinctsThisprogramwilldeveloptoolsthatenablethedesignofandstimulatethemarketforlowcarboninfrastructureatx18precinctx19scale.Thiswillfacilitatepropertydevelopersandlocalgovernmentpartnersprovidinglowcarboninfrastructureatthedevelopmentplanningpointofdelivery.AnemphasisonresearcheducationandtraininginbuildinginformationmodelingBIMandextensiontoanewprecinctscalePIMplatformwilldramaticallyimproveSMEdesignproductivity.Healthandproductivityco-benetsanalysiswilldemonstratetheincreasedvalueandstimulatedemandforlowcarbonprecincts.3.EngagedCommunitiesThisprogramwillfocusonunderstandingandinuencingbehaviourandpurchasingdecisions.Policyscenarioanalysiswillquantifytheeffectivenessofalternativeoptionsleadingtopolicyadoptionbygovernmentpartners.Newlowcarbonlivingstrategiesthatmobiliseculturalandsocialcapitalswillbedemonstrated.CRCresearchndingswillbefullyroadtestedinx18livinglaboratoriesx19toensurethatresultsarerobusttangibleandappealing.Resultswillbeusedtodevelopcommunityeducationandtrainingresourcesincludingthoseformassmediadissemination.IntegratedbuildingsystemsistheprimaryresearchprogramofinteresttotheAshDevelopmentAssociationofAustralia.SincetheannouncementtheAssociationhasbeenworkingcloselywithresearchersandCRCmanagerstodeveloppossibleprojectsandfundingrequirementstocommenceinJuly2012.GenesisEnergyoperatingtheHuntlyPowerStationinNewZealandisoneoftheAssociationx19snewestmembersproledinthisedition.Thefouroriginal250MWunitsatGenesisEnergyx19sHuntlyPowerStationarepredominantlyfuelledusingcoal.TheseRankine-cycleturbinesarecapableofbeingdual-fuelledandintermittentlyusenaturalgasatvarioustimes.Thefourunitsoperateinahydrormingrolewithoutputgenerallydeterminedbyrainfallandhydrostorageratherthanbaseloadgenerationwhichisnormallyassociatedwithathermalplant.Theamountofashproducedannuallythereforetendstobevariablearoundthe50000to100000tonnesrange.Theashcontentofthesub-bituminouscoalusedmainlyfromnearbyWaikatocoaleldsisrelativelylowatabout8.Fromthecoal-burningprocesstheyashthatisnotcollectedbyalocalcementcompanyandallfurnacebottomashismixedwithwaterintoalean-phaseslurry.Thisissentviaapipelinetoashsettlingponds2kmfromthepowerstation.Inthesummerof20112012approximately150000tonnesofemplacedpondashwasexcavatedandtruckedtoremediateanearbyminevoid.Thebenecialuseofcoalcombustionproductsinminevoidremediationhasbeendevelopingforseveralyearswiththepurpose-builtpodsatthecoalminevoidreachingcapacitysoon.Recentlyrecoveredcoalcombustionproductsforthepondhavebeentransportedtoalargemunicipallandllfacilitywhereitispresentlybeingusedfortwoimportantengineeringapplications.Theprimaryapplicationisasdailycovercappinglayerontopofthefreshwastewhichsavestheneedtoutiliseonsitevirginclaymaterialsforthedailycoverpurpose.Thesecondapplicationisasanengineeredlllayerbaselayerontopofthelandllx19sbasalliningsystem.GenesisEnergyiscontinuingtoinvestigateothersustainablere-usepossibilitiesforthepowerstationcoalcombustionproductsincludingagriculturalapplications.AshmanagementatHuntlyPowerStationHuntlyPowerStationfromabove
