Roads

CCPs are produced under controlled conditions and can be utilised for a number of purposes in road works, often with only a limited amount of processing required. They can also be utilised in a number of ways in road pavement construction and rehabilitation. These include:

  • As a base and sub-base material when stabilised
  • As a component of a stabilising agent
  • In concrete for rigid pavements
  • As a filler in asphalt

FBA properties including density, particle size distribution and moisture content make it relevant to road construction. Due to the pozzolanic nature of the ash, it is well suited to be used in binders for road stabilisation.

The ability to substitute FA for cement in situations provides a reduced alternative without loss of performance. At Port Augusta Power Station, roads and cover over coal stockpiles have been constructed successfully using cement bound mixtures of FA and FBA.
